What is Kutani ware?
It is a traditional Japanese craft.
Ceramics produced in the Kaga region of Ishikawa Prefecture. The specialty of this pottery is overglaze enameling with multi-colored paintings. The heavy and beautiful glow of the five colors of green, yellow, red, purple, and navy blue applied on top of the bold and frank lines of the overglaze painting is a distinctive characteristic of each kiln.
Each kiln has its own unique style, such as the "Aote" style of the Ko-Kutani kilns and the "Akae Hosogaki" style of the Miyamoto-ya kilns. The "Kinrande" technique, which appeared during the Meiji period (1868-1912), took the world by storm and became world famous under the name of "Japan Kutani.
