Shimenawa Sacred rope is used not only at shrines and sacred trees, but also at Kamidana Shinto shrines, and signifies the separation between Tokyo, the sacred realm where the gods live, and Utsushiyo, the world in which we live. By creating a boundary, it prevents impure things from entering the sacred area, so it also has the meaning of protecting the sacred object where the god dwells.
