Who is Maruyama Okyo?
In Kyoto in the mid-Edo period, when various schools of painting were competing for individuality, Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795) created a new concept of “sketching” that depicted the beauty of nature and objects as they are, while incorporating techniques from Chinese and Western painting, and revolutionized the traditional view of Japanese painting.
