What is Hatozu?
This painting depicts waves that swell and splash in large waves. The painting is covered in a haze of gold paint, and the shading between the waves is done in turquoise, while the splashing waves are rendered in a fine white. Like many of Akitaiki's other works, the waves are expressed with numerous overlapping arcs, which seems to have been influenced by Shinnampin.

Hokusai produced more than 30,000 works during his lifetime. He was a master not only of prints but also of ukiyo-e prints, and in his later years he was so ambitious about painting that he even studied copperplate and glass painting.
His masterpieces “Fugaku Sanjurokkei (Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji)” and “Hokusai Manga (Hokusai Manga)” are famous worldwide, and his works influenced Impressionist painters abroad, including Van Gogh.
He also published many picture handbooks (picture instruction books for art students) and contributed greatly to the spread of painting techniques and the education of the general public.
