After studying under Ooka Shuntou, a painter of the Kano school, Jakuchu abandoned that style of painting and copied the dark-colored flower-and-bird paintings of the Song and Yuan paintings (Chinese paintings).
Jakuchu, who also abandoned this method, shifted to sketching the real thing, and painted beautifully colored and meticulously depicted works.
However, in reality, his paintings cannot be called “sketches”, but rather, the colors and forms captured by Jakuchu's unique sensibility are developed throughout his works.
