What is Banko ware?
Banko ware is a type of pottery currently produced mainly in Yokkaichi City and Komono Town, Mie Prefecture.
Banko ware has various names, but among them, “Yokkaichi Banko ware” was designated as a traditional craft of Japan in 1979.
Banko ware is said to have started in the middle of the Edo period.
Nunamirozan, known as a wealthy Kuwana merchant, started its history by opening a kiln.
The kiln that opened in present-day Komukai, Asahi Town, Mie Prefecture, spread to nearby Yokkaichi City and Komono Town.

What are the characteristics of Banko ware?
Banko ware, which boasts a history of more than 300 years, has built up something unique over the years.
One of the characteristics of Banko ware is that it can be classified into “semi-porcelain”.
Banko-yaki, which is semi-porcelain, is very hard, durable, and highly water-resistant.
Banko ware does not use glaze.
In other words, there is a feature of making vessels that make use of the color of the material itself.
