Kuniyoshi studied painting from an early age, and at the age of 12, his painting “Shokioki Shoken Zu” caught the attention of Utagawa Toyokuni I, who took him under his wing at the age of 15. He later became one of the leading ukiyoe artists of the late Edo period and produced many works with a broad appeal that went beyond the framework of ukiyoe, with his abundance of pictorial ideas, innovative design skills, outlandish ideas, and reliable drawing skills.
His depictions of characters from Suikoden are so highly acclaimed that he is called “Kuniyoshi the Samurai Artist,” but he also left behind many other masterpieces in the fields of famous landscapes, portraits of beautiful women and actors, and kyoga (caricatures).
