Kishu lacquer, which is produced mainly in the northwestern part of Kainan City, Wakayama Prefecture, is known as one of the three major lacquer ware producing areas in Japan, along with Aizu lacquer (Fukushima prefecture), Yamanaka lacquer and Wajima lacquer (Ishikawa prefecture). Has been done.
During the Edo period, more than 1200 people involved in lacquer ware lived around Kuroe.
Even now, many people in the Kuroe area are involved in lacquer ware, and the spirit and skills of manufacturing are inherited.
In recognition of its history and achievements, Kishu Laquer Ware was designated as a traditional craft by the country in 1978.
A red and white sake cup that is painted and lacquered on transparent glass using the know-how cultivated in Kishu lacquer ware. It was devised to fit the modern lifestyle while making use of traditional techniques.
Using a technique unique to modern lacquerware, in which colored powder such as gold and silver is sprinkled before the rough sketch dries to decorate it, I drew a thousand paper cranes in the red and white celebratory “colors”.
Normally, glass and colored glass are incompatible with each other and have been avoided for a long time, but by applying special pretreatment, we were able to express the unique texture of Japanese colored glass on glass.
